Life With Braces or Aligners: Eating, Cleaning and Daily Care Tips
Starting treatment is a big step, and the questions usually begin the moment your appliance goes on. What can you eat? How do you keep everything clean? What about sport, travel and the everyday routine? This guide walks you through daily life with braces and clear aligners so the weeks ahead feel simple and predictable.
Whether you have chosen braces or clear aligners, the day-to-day habits that protect your smile are surprisingly similar. A little routine goes a long way, and it becomes second nature within the first couple of weeks. At Ellenbrook Orthodontics, every plan is guided by a Specialist Orthodontist, and part of that care is helping you settle into daily life with your appliance.
Eating With Braces
Fixed braces are strong, but the wires and brackets do not love hard, sticky or chewy foods. The aim is not to give up the foods you enjoy, but to prepare them in a brace-friendly way and avoid the few things most likely to cause a breakage.
Foods to enjoy
- Softer options such as pasta, rice, eggs, yoghurt, soup and cooked vegetables.
- Fruit cut into small pieces rather than bitten straight from the core.
- Soft breads, cheese, fish and tender, well-cooked meats.
Foods to avoid or approach with care
- Hard foods like nuts, boiled sweets and ice, which can snap a bracket.
- Sticky and chewy foods such as toffee, chewing gum and hard muesli bars.
- Crunchy raw items like whole apples, carrots and crusty rolls, which are better cut up.
- Sugary drinks and frequent snacking, which raise the risk of decay around brackets.
A snapped wire or loose bracket is rarely an emergency, but it is worth avoiding where you can. If it does happen, contact us and we will arrange the right appointment.
Eating With Clear Aligners
One of the advantages of clear aligners is that there are no food restrictions, because you take the trays out to eat. The habits that matter here are different but just as important.
- Always remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything other than plain water. Coloured or sugary drinks can stain the trays and feed decay.
- Brush, or at least rinse well, before you put the trays back in, so food and sugar are not sealed against your teeth.
- Store your aligners in their case at mealtimes. Wrapping them in a napkin is the most common way they end up in the bin.
- Aim for the wear time your Specialist Orthodontist prescribes, usually around 20 to 22 hours a day, so treatment stays on track.
Cleaning Your Teeth
Good oral hygiene is the single most valuable daily habit during treatment. Aligned, clean teeth at the end of treatment are the goal, and that starts with looking after them along the way.
With braces
- Brush for two minutes, at least twice a day, angling the brush to reach above and below each bracket.
- Clean between the teeth and under the wire with interdental brushes or floss threaders.
- A fluoride toothpaste, and sometimes a fluoride mouthwash, helps protect the enamel around brackets.
- Brushing after meals where you can will stop food lingering around the wires.
With aligners
- Brush and floss your teeth as normal, morning and night, and after meals when possible.
- Rinse the trays each time you take them out, and clean them gently with a soft brush and cool water.
- Avoid hot water, which can warp the plastic, and skip coloured mouthwash or toothpaste that can dull the trays.
- Keep the case clean too, so you are not putting fresh trays back into a dirty case.
Managing Comfort in the Early Days
Some tenderness is normal when braces are first fitted or when you move to a new set of aligners, because your teeth are gently moving. It usually settles within a few days. Soft foods, plenty of water and, if needed, your usual over-the-counter pain relief can help. Orthodontic wax smooths any bracket that feels sharp against your cheek. We cover this in more detail in our braces and aligners comfort guide.
Sport, Instruments and Everyday Life
- For contact sport, a mouthguard is important. With braces you may need one shaped to fit over your appliance, so ask us for advice before the season starts.
- With aligners, take the trays out and store them safely during play, then pop them straight back in.
- Playing a wind or brass instrument can feel slightly different at first with braces, but most people adjust quickly.
- Speech with new aligners can feel unusual for a day or two, then normalises as your tongue adapts.
Travel Tips
- Pack a small travel kit: toothbrush, toothpaste, interdental brushes or floss, orthodontic wax and your aligner case.
- If you wear aligners, take your current and next sets, plus your most recent set, so you have a backup if one is lost.
- Keep to your wear schedule while away, and let us know before long trips in case a check-up is due.
Keeping Up With Your Appointments
Regular reviews let your Specialist Orthodontist keep treatment moving safely and make small adjustments along the way. If a bracket comes loose, an aligner cracks, or something simply does not feel right, get in touch rather than waiting for the next visit. Whether you are a teen, an adult, or a parent supporting a child through teen or adult treatment, staying in touch is the easiest way to keep things on track.
Life After Treatment
Daily care does not stop the day your braces come off or your final aligner is done. Wearing your retainer as prescribed is what protects all that hard work, and you can read more about why in our guide on what happens if you do not wear a retainer.
Living with braces or clear aligners becomes routine far more quickly than most people expect. With a few brace-friendly food swaps, a solid cleaning habit and a little care with your appliance, you can get on with everyday life while your smile quietly transforms.
